Recently, someone asked if we ever hosted musical events here. In true CubeSpace style, we responded, "Why, no. Not yet, that is!" So at 6:30 p.m. on April 10th, we are presenting the first CubeSpace musical evening, complete with fresh, seasonal, locally-produced ice cream from Cool Moon Creamery. Entertainment will be provided by Smiddy, the illustrious Folk-Singing Carpet Cleaner, who performs in an eclectic folk/country style. We hope to see you all here, socializing, snacking and enjoying the tunes!
Bring your friends and family!
You may have seen a new face around the reception desk lately. There has been an addition to the CubeSpace gang: Mycroft Evans, who returned to Portland after a number of years in Melbourne, Australia. She brings with her management experience in the high-tech and telecommunications industries, as well as (need we even mention?) the ability to knit and crochet. We're excited for Mycroft's arrival; feel free to introduce yourself if you see her around the office.
In a fit of high spirits brought on by the fragrant Spring air, balmy late-winter sunshine and clumps of crocus bursting out all over the city, we at CubeSpace have decided to hold a celebratory event to mark the new season. At lunchtime on Wednesday, March 19, we'll be having an egg-dyeing in the Agora and an egg hunt throughout the space. The festivities should get going around 11:30, so come chip in and take a dye/hunt break. Spring is almost here!
Also, we have new art in the Agora! Bridget Benton has hung some of her recent work, including encaustic, fiber, and assemblage. These are beautiful, elaborate pieces -- you'll want to get up close and examine them. Drop by and check them out! You can also learn about Bridget on her blog.
The second annual Nonprofit Continuum Conference will be taking place at Portland State University and CubeSpace next month, on April 4th and 5th. On the 5th, a Saturday, sessions will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at CubeSpace, and cover a range of topics from cultural norms and leadership transitions, to managing volunteers and integrating grantwriting and program development. To cap it all off, our own Eva Schweber will be presenting! For more information or to register for the conference, visit www.nonprofitcontinuum.org.
If you already know you want to register for the conference, you can do it onlline.
In keeping with a general CubeSpace theme, today we have some exciting knitting news to share with you! Our very own Emily has reached a culminating point in a huge project she's been working on. Our members are accustomed to seeing her knitting at the front desk, producing beautiful garments in lavish yarns. Emily designs many of her own knitting patterns and sews much of her own clothing. She has taken her love of fashion further by deciding to design and knit one garment inspired by each of her parents, grandparents and great-grandparents. One of these patterns, called Marjorie, has been included in this spring's edition of Knitty, which came out today. Knitty is the number one online knitting magazine.
We are very proud of Emily. She does beautiful work and this is a fantastic opportunity for others to appreciate it. To see her project at large, check out http://www.familytrunkproject.com.
CubeSpace is welcoming two new opportunities to help you with your business: Patent attorney John Anderton and the Portland chapter of the networking group LeTip.
Twice weekly throughout March, attorney John Anderton will be offering free patent law advice to interested individuals. If you've got questions about patent law, want clarification or just have an idea you'd like to bounce off a lawyer's trained ear, feel free to visit Dr. John Tuesdays between 2 and 3 p.m. and Thursdays between 7 and 8 p.m. John has written patents for a wide range of fields, from toys and simple mechanicals to server systems and surgical instruments, and he would love to find out about what you are working on!
We'd also like to welcome the Portland chapter of networking group LeTip, who will be meeting at CubeSpace every Wednesday morning from 7:01 to 8:31 a.m. to trade leads and present information about their businesses. For more information on LeTip's current membership and how to join, visit their website at http://portlandletip.com/.
We are excited to announce that CubeSpace will be hosting Startupalooza, an interactive get-together for techie entrepreneurs in the Portland community. With panels, presentations and demos, it will be "an opportunity to find out about cool tech startups, learn from successful tech entrepreneurs and meet local tech-business people in a candid, no-BS environment." Although it's still in the early planning
stages, we think this will be a great partnership, and look forward to seeing what the folks over at Startupalooza put together. For more details, or to track how the planning is going, head over to www.startupalooza.org.
Time to get warm! We will be holding a potluck on Wednesday the 20th, in the hope of chasing away the February doldrums. You're all invited to make or bake your favorite comfort food – the warming, calming concoctions you turn to in times of trouble. We'll be opening up the potluck feast around 11:30, and it will continue until the food is all consumed, or we are stuffed. Savory foods are especially welcome, although it is against the CubeSpace code of ethics to turn away chocolate. See you there!
Knitting Night is just one of the ways that we Cubists express our general craftiness. On this Saturday afternoon, February 9, Suzy Mayer and Bridget Benton are hosting a workshop on making cozy hats and loveably weird stuffed creatures from recycled gloves, mittens and wool sweaters. $5 to either (or both) ladies will get you access to the material stash of your choice, knowledge and instructions on making your hat and/or creature. Be sure to check out Bridget's blog for a peek at some of her stuffed creations. Then rustle up some old sweaters, gloves or hats, and come make some of your own!
